The Rachofsky Collection Graduate Symposium at The Warehouse

The Rachofsky Collection Graduate Symposium at The Warehouse

Dallas, Texas, November 9, 2018
Deadline: June 1, 2018

The Rachofsky Collection of roughly 800 works of contemporary art generally falls within two broad themes: first, the aesthetic of global minimalism, including but not limited to American Minimalism, Postwar European art, with a specific focus on Italian art, and the art of Postwar Japan and Korea; secondly, the exploration of the postwar notion of identity, encompassing much of the representational work from around the globe.

The Rachofsky Collection announces an open call for participation in its inaugural Graduate Symposium at The Warehouse in Dallas, Texas—an exhibition space and project initiated by Cindy and Howard Rachofsky to make their collection available to curators, scholars, critics, and students. With aims to expand research on postwar and contemporary art, the 2018 Graduate Symposium invites master’s and doctoral students to present their scholarly work on a host of artists and topics pertaining to Postwar Italy, Postwar Japan, and Postwar Korea. Students invited to present papers at the symposium will have the opportunity to access works in the collection during a two-day, partially-funded research visit prior to the symposium. Additionally, papers presented at the symposium will be published in a compendium together with the paper delivered by the keynote speaker, Dr. Ming Tiampo. Tiampo is a scholar of transnational vanguardism with a focus on Japan after 1945. Tiampo’s book Gutai: Decentering Modernism (University of Chicago Press, 2011) received an honorable mention for the Robert Motherwell Book award. In 2013, she was co-curator of Gutai: Splendid Playground at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York.

Preference will be given to those papers that address artists in The Rachofsky Collection.

We invite paper presentations of 20 minutes in length. Submissions may include but are not limited to:

  • Excerpt of an MA/MFA paper or thesis
  • Excerpt of a seminar paper
  • Excerpt from a dissertation

Complete proposals must include the following:

  • A complete mailing address, email address, phone number, research field, and university affiliation of participant.
  • Paper title and abstract of no more than 300 words that includes three to five keywords.

Send submissions and questions to
CAITLIN@RACHOFSKYHOUSE.ORG. Proposals are due by Friday, June 1, 2018.

Successful applicants will be notified by June 30, 2018.

Three students will be selected for the 2018 symposium. Successful applicants should be prepared to travel to Dallas for the symposium on Friday, November 9, 2018. Research visit would need to take place between July 2, 2018 and September 30, 2018. Students will be offered a stipend to help supplement the cost of travel for the symposium and the optional research visit. Accommodations for both visits will be provided by The Rachofsky Collection.
